They say you should never judge a book by its cover. Or in this case a CD by it’s hastily assembled sleeve. Atop a photocopied image of Michael Jackson’s ‘Bad’ cover, Mr Nick Nixon has charmingly pasted his own face and scribbled ‘Good’ over ‘Bad’. We immediately sensed this wasn’t a flagship release by an evil corporation.
The music within is really cheap and lo-fi but brilliant; muffled bleeps bounce along in the background of some of the oddest lyrics we have ever heard: ‘Ditched my job with Scott Walker punching meat’ is possibly the only reference we have ever heard to Mr Walker’s obsession with making odd percussion noises. He also then goes on to use the word ‘transubstantiates’, a phrase seldom heard outside old re runs of Father Ted. The music itself cheekily reminds of Kraftwerk, but the sentiments are more Little Chef than Autobahn.
We’d really like to hear more from this man, as he might actually have something interesting to say for himself. B-side ‘Cold Love’ is vying for equal billing, being like some kind of modern Syd Barrett with a Bontempi.
Bonkers but brilliant.
