Noah & The Whale - Blue Skies

Touching in a way that is absolutely unique to everyone.

The second album from Noah And The Whale is riddled with aches and pains emanating from the end of the relationship of Laura Marling and Noah’s singer Charlie Fink, and ‘Blue Skies’ is quite the epitome of these emotions: ‘This is the last song that I write while still in love with you’, what a heartbreaker!

Far from the summer-y no worries of ‘Five Years Time’, this is touching in a way that is absolutely unique to everyone. Subtlety in strings, a choir bringing a fine echo and perfect harmony, and a wonderful trumpet solo, these small parts are all integral, but it is the lyrics that truly make ‘Blue Skies’ what it is. “Cause it’s time to leave those feelings behind, oh cause blue skies are calling but I know that it’s hard” – just this one chorus shows the heartbreak, the fragile mindset that Fink has written this song in and most importantly it highlights the thin border of two major features in this song: it’s delicacy and epicness.

Whilst breaking up with partners often brings negative externalities with it, Noah And The Whale can certainly be proud of this.
