Not Cool - Wonderful Beasts

An unrelenting, flailing squall of noise that’s over before you know quite what’s happened.

Matt Gilbert

’s scream of “My God, it’s really happening!” seems to echo what listening to this song does to you – you’re not quite sure how something like this could exist. ‘Wonderful Beasts’ immediately slams out of your speakers begging for your attention. Breakneck speed guitars, stamping drums and Matt’s distant, atonal yelps all compete to create the loudest noise, before slowing down, sounding like they’re all going to come together to create a more traditional tune before getting even louder and faster, just to spite you.

Their self-proclaimed genre, “gutter pop” doesn’t quite cover what this song sounds like, which is an unrelenting, flailing squall of noise that’s over before you know quite what’s happened and leaves you feeling like you might have been assaulted in the meantime. Not Cool have all the furious dementia of a teenage Future of the Left coupled with a deceptive ear for a melody, and that makes this London three-piece a force to be reckoned with. This is music to make you sweat just listening to it, and it’s brilliant.
