Tricycle wheels tumbling down a hill, spoons rattling in a jar, typewriter being shut in a car door, all overlain with magically mysterious vocals. That was what Psapp used to sound like. Or at least what DIY remembers them sounding like on their super-ace ‘The Only Think I Ever Wanted’ in 2006. But the ‘Monster Song’, my o my, it’s clearer; bobs rather than clatters, with joyful tweaks complimenting a bright choral line. Even talking about spooky beasts can’t hide the fact that Psapp have lost that sinister edge.
But don’t be disheartened! There’s still the odd rogue cheesegrater noize knocking about but it doesn’t even need that kind of quirk. An altogether different kind of plink-plonk magic, optimistically bright rather than mutedly reflective this is a lovely single. Psapp are back. Hooray.
