London five-piece Red Light Company’s ‘Scheme Eugene’ is typical Radio One fodder. A repetitive, simple-but-likeable melody that’s actually rather good on subsequent listens; it’s one of those tunes that, once it gets stuck in your brain, it stays there.
‘Scheme Eugene’ really comes alive in the chorus, though perhaps there’s a bit too much in the backing vocals - they’re drowning out that simple-but-likeable melody, which is a shame.
Are Red Light Company destined for world domination? Unlikely, but with ‘Scheme Eugene’ they may just take over the UK - certainly they have the potential.
On the downside ‘Scheme Eugene’ should probably have ended thirty seconds before the single’s abrupt close. Other than that, it’s as strong a contender in the charts as any other.
