‘Vultures’ is the first single to be taken from Brooklyn duo She Keeps Bees’ new record, ‘Dig On’, and you can quickly see the development from 2009’s ‘Nests’ to now. ‘Vultures’ is a higher quality production and more accomplished, simple yet extremely effective, comprising of a looped percussion line and guitar riff, with singer Jessica Larrabee’s vocals intertwined.
The track calls to mind PJ Harvey, in particular the Steve Albini produced record ‘Rid Of Me’, which is high praise indeed. The band are also reminiscent to Cat Power, especially in the way the vocals are delivered. Whilst these influences can be heard in the single it is still very much the duo’s own, culminating in a refreshingly raw sound.
‘Vultures’ is a powerful single driven by effective composition by Nathan and superb vocals by Jess. It shares influences with the 90’s alternative singer songwriters with grunge and blues elements thrown in for good measure. There have been some truly great records released recently and if She Keeps Bees’ next album follows on in the same vein as this single then it looks like there will be another to add to that list.
