Sky Larkin - Fossil, I
3-5 StarsThe juxtaposition of the rock band and the pop vocals work to make a song that is gloriously off kilter.
have been pretty quiet since the release of ‘Molten’/’Keepsakes’ last year, now they’re with Wichita however things are hotting up. They’re about to tour with Those Dancing Days and they’ve put out this full throttle pop track, which smacks you in the face from the offset and buggers off again before it reaches the two and a half minute mark.
Singer Katie Harkin has a fantastic unique voice and the three-piece band sat up perfectly compliments this. The instruments race with loud rock drums and buzzing guitar as her voice soars. The juxtaposition of the rock band and the pop vocals work to make a song that is gloriously off kilter. What the metaphor of fossilisation relates to is anyone’s guess but the lyrics “Between the layers of earth we sit / Two small creatures caught in grit” are ace nonetheless.
This song is anything but an imprint of a skeleton, rather is fully fleshed out and realised. This said, ‘Fossil, I’ is far from the best that these lads and lady are capable of (check out their cover of ‘I Was A Teenage Hand Model’ or old Dance To The Radio release ‘One Of Two’). We await more material with bated breath.
