‘Giving Up On Love’ could just be Slow Club’s perfect antidote to their previous sickeningly sweet tune ‘Let’s Fall Back In Love’. Unlike the latter and it’s summer camp vibe, this new single is a britpop-esque track layered with acceptance.
The song isn’t full of downright depressing heartbreak however (despite lines such as: ‘I’ve been hurting inside, For far too long now, too long now, So I’m giving it up.’), and, surprisingly, it’s nice to hear the two being a little less twee than usual. Well, a tiny bit less twee anyway. It still contains that folksy stamp they happily stick on everything, and the same genre of love they seem obsessed with, but there’s something a little different about this one; perhaps it’s the country feel or the lack of cutesy wutsy imagery they can be prone to using.
Despite the changes, the essence of Slow Club remains the same along with the beautiful vocal harmonies and yes, don’t worry, the great big sing-along chorus.
