If Glasgow City Council was looking for ambassadors to write them something of a theme song, Sons And Daughters could do the job better than a Belle & Sebastian / Franz Ferdinand supergroup. ‘This Gift’ is a bit like a drunken argument followed by a shameless sucker-punch outside the city’s slightly dodgy Barrowlands venue: dark, seething and a little bit dangerous.
Beginning with a rally cry of ‘ah-ooh, ah-ooh’, the song is captivating from start to finish. The verse sees singer Adele Bethel providing a passionate delivery of somewhere between snarling and sexy, while the chorus sees a sudden change in rhythm and intensity. Menacing, loud and faster than a group of neds running from the police, drummer David Gow is what makes the song truly sparkle. So grab your finest tonic wine, pop a Burberry cap on your head and let Sons And Daughters bring the sound of their hometown’s side streets to you.
