Styrofoam ‐ Bright Red Helmet

It’s hard not to be entranced.

Lovable Belgian geek Arne Van Petegem used to hide behind a plethora of twiddles and beeps when previously acting as Styrofoam for his then really flippin’ brilliant German label Morr Music. Relegated to background noise on ‘Bright Red Helmet’, prominent vocals and tinny guitar replace the machines while playful chanting sections result in a track that’s more akin to Get Cape! Wear Cape! Fly! than his usual Lali Puna-esque fare.

Even though the frenetic accompaniment is slightly grating at points, it’s still an easy acoustic listen that forms the major part of the track, fluffily bounding to a climbing finish.

Overall, while it’s hard not to be entranced by the closing gambit, ‘it looks like things are about to fall apart’, the latest single retains geeky credentials but oddly, considering the more human approach, becomes a little less loveable.
