Currently touring with Los Campesinos, Swanton Bombs are a rather different proposition from the aforementioned band. ‘Viktoria’ is three minutes of stomping garage / blues pop, in the vein of early Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and the sadly missed 22-20s.
It’s scuzzy sounding, it’s got meaty riffs, and vocalist Dominic McGuinness can’t sing for toffee (at points of the chorus, it’s actually painful). Yet (and this is important): this isn’t a bad thing. With the music world currently caught in the grip of stupidly overproduced, autotuned-to-within-an-inch-of-it’s-life electro/anything crossover tracks, ‘Viktoria’ is a breath of fresh air. No, it’s not in any way, shape or form original. Will you be fondly remembering it in six months? Probably not. Will it sound ace live? Yes.
From hearing this track alone, Swanton Bombs strike as a band who only put out singles so they have a reason to tour and play live: for footstomping, headnodding goodness, look no further.
