If you were to look for an aural representation of all that is wrong with music in 2008, ‘Shut Up And Let Me Go’ might just prove to be the perfect example.
In a classic case of pop-by-numbers gone wrong, someone’s decided to mash up two successful dancefloor fillers and create a great big mess. It’s Blondie’s ‘Rapture’ roughly chopped to Franz Ferdinand’s ‘Take Me Out’, but worse than even that sounds.
Vocalist Katie White might be attempting to sound girlish and cutesy with her yelps and inflections, but in reality all she’s doing is giving an already ropey track more petulance than even Daphne and Celeste could manage, combined.
In short, the Manchester duo’s (apparent) fifth single manages to be even more annoying than breakthrough twice over, ‘That’s Not My Name’. Which takes some doing.
