The Voluntary Butler Scheme - Trading Things In

A decent piece of alterative pop music.

The Voluntary Butler Scheme

have a name that doesn’t give much away about what to expect. Luckily, although this song is all about giving up on principles for (presumably) a girl, TVBS seem to enjoy being a little bit off kilter. The scrappy drum sounds give the feel that this track was made entirely in someone’s bedroom, but when the twee-as-you-like keyboard comes in for the chorus it’s indistinguishably a summer pop song. In short it’s what Jim Noir tried to produce when he came out with ‘What You Gonna Do’.

However, an element of the band that may grate on some is that the vocals do not sound dissimilar those of used by The Feeling. Whilst overall this doesn’t sound too bad, it does clash somewhat with the less commercial sound of the song. Some of us might disagree with the lyric “if you were broccoli I’d turn vegetarian for you”, however, but only those of us who know that no matter how great romance can be, it doesn’t beat a good bacon sandwich. But if you can forgive the claims to his complete lack of moral fibre in the presence of a object of sexual desire then you may just enjoy this song.

Overall, this is a decent piece of alterative pop music. It won’t change your life but it may well just get in your head for a bit. Perfect in the background for a summer barbeque… if we get the weather for it that is.
