Play listed by BBC 6 Music and Radio 1, Various Cruelties’ ‘Great Unknown’ chronicles that pivotal moment in a relationship where the choice needs to be made to see it through or let it crumble. Hardly the most original lyrical theme but one guaranteed to bring a smattering of everyman appeal nonetheless.
Whilst there was a Northern Soul tinged sparkle that underpinned the glorious ‘Chemicals’ this latest effort is somewhat bereft of inspiration, sounding not unlike a Kooks b-side with it’s smattering of piano and overblown chorus.
Maybe there is a subtle irony at work in the choice of title but if downloads have a virtual bargain bin then this is destined for it.
