We See Lights - My Oh My Oh My

A big, massive grin of a song.

When it comes to songs tackling that tricky subject classified as love, there’s an invisible line that separates the interesting from the yawning bores, the witty from the cheesy and the original from the well-worn photocopy. Get on the right side of this imaginary divide and chances are you’ll be in possession of a song that will take residence in the hearts of many a music fan. Get it wrong though, and the abyss – a bloated watering hole for the saccharine “pleasures” of the dullest ballads – beckons for you. We See Lights have somehow managed to dance all over this line.

One thing is clear; ‘My Oh My Oh My’ is undeniably a lot of fun. A charming harmony backs up main singer Stephen Bogleas he gallops through the faintly twee folk with a tale of unrequited love, providing some necessary wit with “You don’t know you’re losing girl, if you don’t know the score”. It combines the optimism of early Los Campesinos! songs like ‘My Year In Lists’, with a lighter type of Mumford & Sons folk. However, if you’ve been paying attention to anything with even slightly folkish overtones in the past few years, then you’ll be able to predict every move this song has to make.

It may come close to being too anonymously folksy for its own good, but that doesn’t matter a blind bit, as this is a big, massive grin of a song. In fact, you’ll be replicating the same toothy smile in no time at all. It dances all over that pesky line then, but does it in the best possible way.
