Having been out Stateside since the middle of last year, the UK release of the Philadelphians’ self-titled debut is, really, little more than a precursor to the brand new LP, ‘Surfing Strange’. But it’s still one hell of a mightily impressive introduction.
Alternating lead vocal duties between Allison Crutcfield (yes, that’s twin sister of Waxahatchee’s Katie) and Kyle Gilbride (producer of Katie’s 2013 breakthrough album, ‘Cerulean Salt’ no less) keep things from ever becoming samey over the twelve tracks here, and while charmingly raw in recording style, there’s not so much fuzz the pop gems risk getting lost.
It’s a seamless mesh of ramshackle indie, 90s grunge and angsty college rock in a deliciously lo-fi package.
