Georgia and Caleb Nott didn’t always share broken hearts. The brother-sister duo probably didn’t used bother each other with futuristic Garageband production or lovelorn lyrics, either. It was probably toy sets and bickering over food portions. Now they’re all grown up, their collaborative Broods project builds on Georgia’s nominations for one of Australia’s Best Young Songwriters, plus the pair’s connections with Lorde producer Joel Little. As a 2k14 pop dream team, they’ve set to work quickly with the surprise release of a self-titled debut EP.
Early tracks ‘Never Gonna Change’ and ‘Bridges’ both feature, the former spitting industrial synths, the latter giving a whole new spin on emotive piano songwriting. Every split-second of this EP is drenched in a future-R&B-tastic aesthetic. Totally on point, so hot right now - whatever, these songs would survive in any post-2000 chart battle. ‘Bridges’ is a hit in waiting, surely. Closer ‘Coattails’ might be the pair’s best track to date; a squeaky, all-innocent power ballad dressed up in shiny clothes. Often enough, it’s easy to vibe out and nod appreciatively at smooth R&B of this ilk. Broods’ speciality is raising the excitement levels, occasionally reaching heights that could, one day, receive Taylor Swift levels of fandom. No understatement.
