New music guide The Neu Bulletin (10th August 2015)
DIY’s daily delivery of ace new music, including Georgia, Lucie Void and Rose Ette.
The Neu Bulletin is a daily update of the most exciting new things DIY’s listening to. Think of it as a stream of recommendations that every so often pops up something spectacular. Most of these are Bandcamp finds, big ups from readers or cheeky submissions that pop out the inbox.
Every day we offer up a choice show, a song of the day (branched under the understated heading “Big Neu Thing”) and a little something extra that’s caught our attention. Check back here every day for your latest Neu Bulletin delivery and follow our ‘Listen’-tag for everything new music related.
THE GIG:
Georgia
London, Rough Trade West
Back in the day, Georgia worked behind the desk at snug London record shop Rough Trade West. Cut to the present day and she’s playing an in-store there to celebrate the release of her debut album. It’s an exciting first work, splintering electronic sounds into crazed directions. R&B, grime and all-out pop all weave their way into the mix.
THE BIG NEU THING:
Lucie Void - Threshold
For some reason, it’s always easier to imagine a bedroom artist doing their thing in a big city - when Lucid Void says she’s from New York, it’s simple to picture her plugging her guitar a couple of floors above taxi cabs, and busied streets. There’s nothing determinedly New York about ‘threshold’, a song that takes the basic aspects of grunge before tearing them into pieces. A “love song”, it sees Void singing “I don’t mind living badly if it’s next to you.” Earnest but defined by its tiny details, it takes the city to another planet.
OTHER NEU BUSINESS:
Rose Ette - Thunder
Houston’s Rose Ette make music that resembles a headrush, a sudden jolt of life that wipes away any scattered thoughts. “You can’t hide” they declare on ‘Thunder’, a bloodthirsty bolt out of the blue that arrives after a handful of local dates, including with Quarterbacks and Sand Dunes.
