American Football share Ethel Cain cover of ‘For Sure’
The new rendition is lifted from a forthcoming covers edition of their seminal debut album.

American Football have unveiled Ethel Cain’s take on their 1999 track ‘For Sure’ - a cover that comes as part of the 25th anniversary celebrations for the band’s beloved, self-titled debut album.
The single is set to feature on a new covers edition of the LP too, which will contain reinterpretations of classic American Football songs from the likes of Blondshell, Manchester Orchestra, Iron & Wine (who shared their version of ‘Never Meant’ back in July) and more.
“I knew I wanted to do ‘For Sure’ immediately,” Cain has said of the track. “It’s always stood out to me every time I spin the record, and I knew exactly how I wanted to translate it into my sound.
“American Football is one of those bands that really marked such a moment in time with their debut record, a mark with so much longevity that it found me the same way at 20 years old that I imagine it found everyone else the day it was first released: as an instant classic. Their sonic storytelling has inspired me in more ways than I can count over the years, so being asked to contribute to this covers edition was truly an honor. American Football forever.”
As for the band’s Steve Lamos - who first became familiar with Cain’s work through one of his college students - her cover has, in his words, “somehow made me like this track even more than I already did.”
Both a remastered 25th anniversary edition of ‘American Football’ and the ‘American Football (Covers)’ LP will be released on 18th October via Polyvinyl Record Co.
