Music bands together to support ACLU

Everyone from Bandcamp to Sorority Noise is raising money for the American civil rights organisation.

In light of Donald Trump’s discriminatory Executive Order - which bans nationals from seven predominantly Muslim countries from entries to the U.S.A - bands and companies across music have banded together to fundraise for ACLU.

The American Civil Liberties Union has already filed a lawsuit against the EO, and has had early success in securing entry for all holders of green cards, regardless of nationality. There will be many more legal battles to come in protecting constitutional and human rights. Sia has already matched $100,000 worth of donations to the ACLU, and in the last week alone, the organisation has received a staggering $24 million dollars in donations.

As the fundraising push continues, music streaming site Bandcamp has confirmed it’ll be donating every penny of revenue earned on Friday 3rd Feb to ACLU.

“Like 98% of U.S. citizens (including the President), I am the descendant of immigrants,” wrote Bandcamp’s CEO Ethan Diamond, “my great-grandparents came to America from Russia and Lithuania as teenagers and worked in sweatshops until they were able to afford to bring the rest of their families over. Most everyone you speak to in this country has a similar story to tell, because we are, in fact, a nation of immigrants, bound together by a shared belief in justice, equality, and the freedom to pursue a better life. In this context, last week’s Executive Order barring immigrants and refugees from seven Middle Eastern countries from entering the United States is not simply immoral, it violates the very spirit and foundation of America.”

Elsewhere, Sorority Noise have covered Brand New number ‘Me Vs. Maradona Vs. Elvis’ to raise funds for the organisation, and the band’s Cameron Boucher has put his entire back-catalogue on Bandcamp on a pay-what-you-like basis. Again, all proceeds will go to ACLU.
