Basement Revolver pull the trigger with their ace debut EP

Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Basement Revolver.

Dripping in atmospherics and carrying a sense of longing that could stretch back decades, Basement Revolver’s self-titled debut EP is a soaring case study in emotional potential.

From recent Neu Bulletin favourite ‘Words’ and its aches and pains, through to the soft build of ‘Lake, Steel, Oil’, there’s a metamorphosis in every story-teller’s line and note. A patchwork quilt of The Maccabees’ softly strummed builds and the melodic force of Alvvays, the Hamilton band strike out with such confident force it’s hard to believe this is a first work.

“These songs were all written at a point in my life where I was experiencing a change in identity,” explains the band’s Chrisy Hurn. “Lyrically, there was a lot of looking back and processing the life and experiences I had been through. As a band we chose these songs in particular because they are some of our favourites from that time and they all share a similar mentality and tone. These are the songs that helped to shape and make us.”

Get the first spin of ‘Basement Revolver’ below, and pre-order it digitally or on tape via Fear Of Missing Out Records - it’s out tomorrow (!).
