Ben Khan details self-titled debut album with new track ‘ruby’

We talk to the singer about his first effort, out in August via Dirty Hit.

Ben Khan has announced full details of his debut album! After returning in April with new single ‘200 Angels’ and confirmation that his long-awaited first effort would arrive this summer, it’s now all been detailed.

‘Ben Khan’ will come out on 10th August via Dirty Hit, and is being previewed by another new track, ‘Ruby’. It follows another new track, ‘Do It Right’, which came out last month.

Following EPs ‘1992’ and ‘1000’, the record was produced by Flood (PJ Harvey, Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails) and comes alongside a new website - The Foundation - which lets you dig deeper into its story and creation.

Your debut album is finally here. How does it feel?

It was a nice feeling to have it on wax for first time and listen through. It all comes down to this one thing. It felt relaxing.

Has the record been in the works for your whole career, or is it a relatively new set of songs?

It’s a mix. Old thoughts and new processes, new thoughts and old processes. They feel old and new at same time to me.

You’ve taken quite a bit of time off before this album - was it a case of reassessing what you wanted to say as an artist?

Something like that. It’s good to know what you want to give and what you hope to get. A lot of the time songs just kind of happen. When it comes to music I don’t believe in reason too much. It’s about emotion and feeling and intuition.

And can you tell us a bit about new track ‘Ruby’?

It’s a song sung from the other persons perspective in an old relationship of mine. It might have been about me trying to understand and empathise with a kind of messy situation.

The album’s out this summer - what’s the plan moving on? A new live show, maybe?

I just want to stay busy with making things. I’ve been rehearsing with a group recently and we shot a live video for one of the tracks which got me thinking about a live show. Live stuff will happen for sure.
