DIY punks Charmpit get sweet on ‘Jelly’ EP

The new collection, out via Keroleen Records on Friday (14th July), is today’s Neu Pick.

Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Charmpit.

California trio Charmpit are described as “popstar punk anarcuties”, and the description is pretty apt - the band mix saccharine-sweet melodies with gritty subject matter, and it’s a harmonious meeting of polarising states.

The band, who formed last year as part of the First Timers festival at DIY Space For London - a festival where every band on the line-up is playing their very first show - are releasing new EP ‘Jelly’ via Keroleen Records on Friday (14th July), and we’ve got the first spin of the whole thing as today’s Neu Pick.

With no song breaking the three-minute mark, it’s a deliciously short-but-sweet collection. The production on ‘Jelly’ is disctinctly lo-fi, but not fuzzy enough to drown out the swarm of melodies that fill each of its four tracks, and make it an irresistible listen.

In highlight ‘Margot’, spiky guitars wash over boppy, sugary basslines, and the interplay between the three members hints at a chemistry that will see Charmpit produce many more gems.

The band are playing a release show for ‘Jelly’ at London’s Shacklewell Arms on Friday. Get more details on that here, and listen to the EP in full below.
