Fake Laugh, Nai Harvest & more record over Mac DeMarco’s instrumental LP

At the start of this month, Mac DeMarco found a spare couple of days and decided to release an LP consisting entirely of instrumentals. He called it the ideal “BBQ Soundtrack”, and it showcased the same kind of precise but sleepy licks that define his new mini-album ‘Another One’ and previous record ‘Salad Days’.

Something had to be done. These hooks needed something on the end of them. Less than a month later, and acts including Fake Laugh and Nai Harvest have dubbed over their own songs, on top of Mac’s drifting instrumentals.

Songs have retained the original titles and foundations, but everything else is new. Like a stoned karaoke session, the best cuts provide fresh pop edges. Fake Laugh’s ‘Young Coconut’ is a beach-combing beauty and Shunkan’s ‘Hachiko’ filters things through a cinematic prism.
