Gengahr on their Glastonbury 2015 set: “With a hangover, there are worse things you could listen to”

Earlier today, Gengahr had the job of waking Glastonbury up from its sodden Sunday slumber, performing just before Midday on the John Peel Stage.

Their second time at the festival, the set saw them showcasing songs from their debut album ‘A Dream Outside’. Frontman Felix Bushe admits that it was a “really tough slot,” and things didn’t get any easier when bassist Hugh Schulte went awol.

“Hugh actually decided to go for a wee before we played. Literally as we were walking on stage,” says Bushe. “We were seeing him pegging it down to the toilets, thinking he’ll probably slip in the mud and fall on his face. And that would be quite typical of Hugh - if anyone was going to fall over.”

After a minute of being a man down, Gengahr were finally joined by Schulte, who even got his own round of applause. “I think Hugh’s was louder,” says guitarist John Victor.

Going back to their set, the band say they didn’t have the easiest of slots. “When we got it, I thought it’d be fine. Midday, if it’s sunny, who’s going to stay in their tent and not head outside? But when we turned up, it was pissing with rain,” says Bushe. “And I realised that actually, what you would do in this circumstance is be very hungover and staying in bed until the rain stops. Most people probably wisely stayed in their tents. I don’t think it was amazing, but the people who turned up were probably slightly happy. Whoever put us there probably thought we’d be a good thing to start the day to. Our music can ease you into a day - with a hangover, there are worse things you could listen to.”

“They woke up as we woke up. It came together by the end,” says Victor.

Later today, Gengahr play a last-minute set at the Crow’s Nest from 7pm.
