Ibeyi release new single, ‘Mama Says’
XL-signed duo specialise in curious, bare-bones pop - listen to their latest track.
It’s only been a couple of months, but XL Recordings’ latest signing Ibeyi haven’t taken long in asserting themselves as a curious pop prospect. Their debut EP ‘Oya’ came out last month, leading with a title-track and the attention-stealing ‘River’. Now the duo are following things up with a booming, piano-led number, ‘Mama Says’.
Sticking to the themes of family and faith that define all of their early effort, this is a finger-clicking, percussive piece that owes as much to space as it does to a stirring lead vocal.
Like everything else they’ve released so far, ‘Mama Says’ is produced by XL’s head honcho Richard Russell, who also worked on Damon Albarn’s Mercury Prize-nominated solo album ‘Everyday Robots’.
‘Mama Says’ is available on iTunes now.
