IDER set hearts racing with ‘Pulse’

The Shura-approved London duo master a fine art on their head-turning second track.

Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from IDER.

Back in April, a little-known duo named IDER took a curious first step. ‘Sorry’ was strange, in fact it managed to put a spin on a pop trope that was beginning to look done and dusted. Mixing sentiment with open-ended piano notes was beginning to come off like the faint, final tremors of London Grammar’s debut. But IDER flipped the rulebook, their debut track being an impressive lesson in pop perfectionism.

With Shura an early plaudit, Megan Markwick and Lily Somerville are back with ‘Pulse’, an ironically heart-stopping second track. Once again, the pair manage to blur the lines between tradition and invention. It’s easy to perceive these floaty, emotion-laced sounds as regular fixtures, but they’ve rarely been delivered with this much style. IDER balance a terrifying tightrope, and they defy gravity and probability with these efforts.
