Watch: Jarvis Cocker and Chilly Gonzalez reveal videos for ‘Tearjerker’ and ‘The Tearjerker Returns’
The tracks are taken from their upcoming album ‘Room 29’.
In Jarvis Cocker’s voice: “Do you believe in ghosts? What if a room could tell you the life-stories of the people that have inhabited it? Better still: what if it could sing you these stories? Would that be of interest to you? Then you may want to come to Room 29.”
Yep, that’s the concept behind Jarvis’ and Chilly Gonzales’ new collaborative record ‘Room 29’, which asks what the ghosts of Hollywood’s golden age can tell us about where we are today. The pair have previously worked together on a version of Stephen Sondheim’s ‘I’m Still Here’, which led them to collaborate on this larger work.
‘Room 29’ is the result of a three-year voyage of discovery, as they learned about guests at the Chateau Marmont in Hollywood, which included Jean Harlow, Mark Twain’s daughter Clara and Los Angeles mobster Meyer Cohen.
The pair have now just revealed two new videos taken from the project, accompanying the downbeat ballad ‘Tearjerker’ and the instrumental ‘The Tearjerker Returns’. Both videos feature a static clip shot from inside a hotel room, the first featuring a man lying still on the bed, and the second without. It’s all very contemplative, fitting the tone of each track.
