Jay Z reveals he no longer has a record deal
Despite owning Roc Nation, Jay Z is currently without a contract.
Jay Z has revealed at a recent TIDAL Q&A that he is currently without a record deal on any major label.
Speaking at New York University’s ‘Tisch School’s Clive Davis Institute of Record Music’, Jay Z was asked whether TIDAL “would exclude major labels in its drive to service artists”, he told professor Errol Kolosine that it wouldn’t be possible given the complexities of how contracts work between artists and labels. “If you don’t have a contract as an independent artist,” Jay Z said, “then you can do whatever you want and we would love to work with you.”
According to The FADER, Kolosine then asked if an artist could use TIDAL in “lieu of a record contract”, with Jay Z stating, “I’m on TIDAL. I don’t have a record deal. So, yes”.
