Korea’s ska pioneers Kingston Rudieska to take on K-Music Festival 2017

Seoul may not be the first city you think of when you say ‘ska!’ but there’s a fanatical ska and reggae movement there, and Korea’s ska pioneers, Kingston Rudieska, are at the forefront of the scene.

Combining ska and reggae with a Korean twist, their great heroes are The Skatalites, and the band mix foot-stomping bluebeat instrumentals – fronted by four horns – with warm, soulful vocal numbers. They call their creation ‘FeastSka!’ and they’re performing at the Borderline on 23rd October 2017.

K-Music Festival has also announced some exciting collaborative works with international artists this year. At the Vortex, taegum player – a bamboo flute - Hyelim Kim is set to perform with exciting rising star Alice Zawadzki on 2nd October while composer/musician Woojae Park will be joined by Japanese drummer Shogo Yoshii and British Indian composer Soumik Datta for a special one-off concert at Rich Mix on 9th October. AUX will then present their theatrical pansori-rock at Rich Mix on 15th October before Korean Sounds presents a concert of East and West at Kings Place; it’ll look at traditional Pansori storytelling and at classical Western opera on 11th October.

The festival then closes at Kings Place on 25th October with one of Korea’s most creative artists Jiha Park, formerly of [su:m], performing her beautiful and spellbinding composition, Communion.
