Listen: DZ Deathrays Return With New Track ‘Northern Lights’

Dazzling new effort is a power ballad”, heading up the Aussie duo’s second album, out early 2014.”

Aussie duo DZ Deathrays have spent time out of the spotlight following the release of their 2011 LP ‘Bloodstreams’. Studio sessions, quick holidays, maybe even a big old fashioned trip to Scandinavia to check out the northern lights?

Not quite. Saying that, their returning effort carries the ‘Northern Lights’ title and as an experience, it’s just as blinding and colourful as the real thing. Heading up Shane Parsons and Simon Ridley’s second record, it was recorded in hometown Yass. At the time, the pair were concerned with the fact that ‘if you aren’t constantly producing material to release it’s very easy to get left behind.’

They soon shook off any nagging issues over release dates and instead went for the jugular. ‘Northern Lights’ is a dazzling returning track, defined by harsh, swelling guitars that emerge from the ground and aim skywards.

We wanted to come out with something very different that people wouldn’t be expecting. The song is essentially our version of all the great power ballads that bands like Motley Crue, Ozzy, Guns n Roses would write back in the ’80s,’ the band told DIY.
