Listen: SMLH Streams ‘Neon Visions’ Track From Debut Single

North Carolina’s Sam Higgins has been making music under the SMLH name for a couple of years now, but he’s filtering his dream-enhanced bedroom pop into a debut single proper this month. A full-length’s due out later this year (‘Fall’), and it’s being headed up by ‘Neon Visions’, which builds on from this March’s super scrappy (intentionally so) ‘It’s Five O’ Clock Somewhere’ EP.

‘Neon Visions’ is fairly simple in execution. There’s winding, beach-ready guitars nestling up next to vocals that could’ve come through multiple distortion pedals at once. And it’s all backed by an easy-as-it-gets drum machine pattern. This is the work of a 17 year old with computer wires wound round his ankles, ready to make him trip. But trip he doesn’t, instead pulling off the improbable by making the slack and serene sound like the work of a perfectionist.
