Today marks the day that The Gaslight Anthem release their fourth album - and coincidentally, their major label debut - ‘Handwritten’, and as a special treat, they’re now streaming an entirely new track.

It may not appear on the eleven-track record, but here is an acoustic-led original entitled ‘Teenage Rebellion’ (as premiered on Rolling Stone), which sees the vocals of Brian Fallon take centre stage in this fragile, wavering effort.

Speaking to us about ‘Handwritten’ in the latest issue of DIY Magazine, Brian Fallon gave us an insight into the subject matter he dealt with on this record: “I talked about my family and my upbringing,” says Fallon. “My parents got divorced right before I was born and I never knew my dad. I mean, I knew who he was but I never had any contact with him at all, so I wanted to deal with that. That’s always been kind of like a weird little dog that follows me around, and I’m imagining a lot of other people feel that way too. It doesn’t even have to be about a parent, it could be about anything that follows you around: drug addiction or a break up, a divorce or whatever. Maybe the loss of someone. That’s the kind of stuff that we wrote about.”

“I tackled every day topics: there’s even one little snippet about the way that people live their lives on the computer now. They don’t see each other or touch each other. It’s odd! There’s a little thing on the last song on the record that’s kind of like, hey, this is American life now. What do you do? That’s why the song’s called ‘National Anthem’; it’s because the national anthem of America is kind of devoid of emotion.”

In other news, the band will head out on tour this October in support of their new album, ‘Handwritten’, with two shows scheduled at London’s Brixton Academy.

The run currently consists of five dates, with stops in London, Manchester, Glasgow and Birmingham, and will follow on from an appearance at Reading & Leeds Festival this August.

Support also happens to come from Blood Red Shoes.
