Liu Bei share ‘Philip Seymour Hoffman’ single
Tribute track forms part of the band’s new 7” single.
London group Liu Bei started out with choral, sweeping pop, their speciality stamped to a mast. It hasn’t shifted with their new single, but they’ve upped the drama stakes.
‘Philip Seymour Hoffman’ is, you guessed it, in part devoted to the late actor. And it’s an emotion-wrung example of Richard Walters and Patrick James Pearson, who have previous with tugging at the heartstrings - independently, they’ve both recently worked with composer Olaur Arnalds and newcomer Grace Lightman.
“When he died I was genuinely broken by it, it felt like such an unexpected loss…the chorus line was originally me jokingly asking who’s going to play me in the big Oliver Stone biopic of my life, but then just became about him…who the fuck is going to play Philip Seymour Hoffman?” says Walters.
If you’re not a sobbing wreck by the end of this, you’ll have to watch that montage sequence from ‘Up’ again.
We’re premiering Liu Bei’s new track below. It links up with ‘Mind Over Matter’ in forming a new 7” single, out 25th September on London label Famous Friends.
