Lower Dens channel the 80s in new video for ‘Real Thing’

The 80s are in vogue right now. First Stranger Things comes along and reignites our passion for old John Carpenter movies and quilted gilets, now Baltimore’s Lower Dens have made a charmingly retro, synth-heavy new single, ‘Real Thing’.

Written alongside Arthur Bates and Ariel Rechtshaid, it’s their first new track since last year’s album ‘Escape From Evil’ and sits somewhere between The Cure and Soft Cell. It’s got a jagged edge in the lyrics though - it’s all about a married woman who likes to have one night stands. No drama there then.

“The lyrics were inspired by an advice column in an old copy of ‘Oui’ magazine I found in Arthur’s apartment,” singer Jana Hunter said in a statement. “The woman writing in to the column seemed genuinely torn between her love for her husband and her desire to fuck around. I find that kind of selfishness entirely relatable, the kind of thing all of us know about ourselves and find nearly impossible to admit.”

To put you even more in a time-warp, the Cody Critcheloe-directed video sees Hunter donning a suit that wouldn’t be out of place in Annie Lennox’s wardrobe and singing cabaret-style like Marc Almond. Swathed in soft lights and a lens that looks like it could with more than just a bit of a clean, it’s like staring at a Top Of The Pops performance from 1982.
