Lower Dens and Future Islands members team up with school-kids for ‘Believe in Baltimore’
The new project is a response to the protests in Baltimore earlier this year.

Following the death of black man Freddie Gray while in police custody, and the subsequent Baltimore protests, local radio station WTMD, and members of Lower Dens and Future Islands have teamed up with kids from local schools to record ‘Believe in Baltimore’. Baltimore musicians The Bridge, Mt. Royal, Outer Spaces, Caleb Stine, Letitia Vansant, and Cara Satalino also pitched in.
William Cashion and Michael Lowry of Future Islands helped out with the musical arrangement, and Lower Dens’ Jana Hunter acted as a vocal coach. The lyrics are entirely written by the children who witnessed the riots first-hand. “This is the definitive song to come out of the unrest in Baltimore, because no one can say it like the kids,” said WTMD’s Baltimore music coordinator Sam Sessa of the new project.
‘Believe in Baltimore’ is part of Living Classrooms Foundation’s Believe in Music program. For more information on their work in Baltimore, and the making of the song, head here. Listen to ‘Believe in Baltimore’ below.
