Nils Frahm shares new album ‘-solo-‘ for free, creates Piano Day holiday

Physical copies of the German composer’s new album will go towards funding a one-of-a-kind piano.

German composer and producer Nils Frahm yesterday dropped a new album, entitled ‘-solo-‘, along with the announcement that he was to celebrate Piano Day on every 88th day of the year (“which most of the time is the 29th of March” apparently, so happy Piano Day!).

The album is available for free download from the official Piano Day website, or for purchase on iTunes, CD or vinyl. The physical and iTunes copies of the album go towards funding the build of the Klavins M450 piano by master piano builder David Klavins.

A prototype of the instrument was used to record ‘-solo-’, and it sounds absolutely enormous - Frahm declares it “the largest and most wonderful piano the world has ever seen”. Specifications for the piano can be found on the Piano day site, and Frahm is seeking to arrange a festival around the final piece once Piano Day 2017 rolls around. Stream ‘Wall’ from the album ‘-solo-’ below, and if you’re feeling inspired, fund the €120,000 build by purchasing the record here or donating to the project here.
