Premiere: LIsten: Scotti Brains Unveil ‘Keep Your Eyes Open Boy’

Dan Carey’s Speedy Wunderground label has spent a good chunk of 2013 putting musicians to the test in intense studio conditions. A day’s worth of recording is all that’s allowed. Initially no lunches were granted to the artists, either. But that was a bit extreme. Think Slim Shady’s ‘one shot, one opportunity’ ethos and maybe add a little more leeway.

So far the supreme Speedy mantra has fledged releases from Archie Bronson Outfit, Steve Mason and Emiliana Torrini and most recently Natasha Khan & TOY. This time round Carey puts himself under the spotlight with his own Scotty Brains project, between himself, Oli Bayston & Beth Buxton.

SW004 carries quite the backstory. A Ross/Rachel ‘we were on a break’ story, if you will. At the time, Buxton and Bayston were dating. Until it came to recording ‘Keep Your Eyes Open Boy’. We’re delighted to report the pair are back on again, but at the time, Beth was sending through her own vocal takes through the phone. ‘Vocal takes’ is a loose phrase. It’s more a gnawing, head-spinning chant that flicks through the foreground of this single, enthralling but completely terrifying at the same time. Blame the dodgy signal.

Released on 2nd September as a limited 250 edition 7’, Scotti Brains’ ‘Keep Your Eyes Open Boy’ can be streamed below, as premiered on DIY.
