Say Lou Lou talk “rhythmic” new album, due later this year
Twin sisters Say Lou Lou are under few illusions when it comes to their musical pathway thus far.
“To begin with,” starts one half of Say Lou Lou, the strikingly blonde Elektra Kilbey, “we were a studio act rather than a live act. We’d never been on stage ever, so this whole thing has been learning how to swim, right in the deep end. It’s been tough, competing against people who have been performing in their garage since they were six, but now we feel as though it’s starting to become fun and natural.”
The beginnings for the Swedish-Australian two-piece may have created a rather sizeable challenge when it came to performing live, but it’s also already stretched them to morph into a new entity. “For the first bunch of songs that we wrote,” explains Miranda, “we had written them before we had even stood on stage. “We didn’t really adapt the music to a live stage,” continues Elektra, in a manner that only twin siblings seem to get away with. “We were just doing it for then and there. Now, we’re so much more aware because we want to make sure that the songs are good live. We have a much larger live aspect to our creative process now. That’s what we missed out on in the beginning: we had ‘Maybe You’ which was a really bass-y, flowy track that was really hard to sing to. There was no real beat.”
“The new songs that are on the album are way more rhythmic,” Miranda assures. “Recording in the beginning, we just did little whispery voices, but for the latter part of the recording process, we’ve realised we can use a bigger range, vocal-wise, and we’re really singing now.”
As for their first album, it primarily looks set to document their journey so far. “We recorded all over the place!” exclaims Elektra, before listing off the locations they’ve settled in. “In Northern Sweden, Stockholm, London, Wales, LA, Sydney. It’s just been wherever we’ve been. I think it represents lots of different times. It’s scattered, but hopefully that scattered-ness and all of the different stories make it become unified. It’s gonna have new songs, but also our earlier songs on there.”
Now, with the majority of the work done and dusted, the sisters are eager to offer their first album proper to the world. Sort of… “In one way,” begins Elektra, “it’s scary because it feels like that’s the end of that album. You can’t keep adding to it. But on the other hand, I just think we need to get it out now… We’re keen to start a new chapter. Obviously, it’s going to be new to most people, but whatever happens with the album, and however it’s received, I’m happy because it’s the first thing we ever did. It’s a dream come true.”
