Slaves announce Girl Fight Records, share ‘Spoons’ from first signings Lady Bird
The Kent trio will be the inaugural release on the new label.
Kicking off 2018 with a brand spanking new venture, Slaves have announced the launch of their own label Girl Fight Records and unveiled their first signings: fellow Kent-dwellers Lady Bird.
Today, the trio also release their first single on the label - a messy ode to everyone’s favourite Curry Club-touting pub chain entitled ‘Spoons’.
“It’s an encapsulation of a confused young man in a world he doesn’t really understand and he’s found himself in ‘Spoons,” explains guitarist Alex Deadman of the song. “The main character is a traditional geezer, but he’s vulnerable. It’s not based on anyone in particular, but I think we could all identify.”
Speaking about the label, Slaves’ Laurie Vincent stressed the band’s grassroots ideals. “It’s not about modelling ourselves against anyone, it’s us putting our mark on the industry,” he enthused. “Me and Isaac, I like to think we’re purists. We didn’t form a band to copy anyone else and we’ve never done anything to be like anyone else. This is just something we wanna do and Lady Bird are the first of that.”
Keep your eyes peeled for the February issue of DIY to read the full story on Girl Fight and Lady Bird’s forthcoming plans, and listen to the playful punk rattle of ‘Spoons’ below.
