Sleigh Bells are officially suing Demi Lovato

The lawsuit concerns ‘Stars” similarity to Alexis Krauss and Derek Miller’s song ‘Infinity Guitars’.

Back in November last year, Sleigh Bells first called out Demi Lovato because they believed that she’d sampled two songs from their 2010 debut album - on her song ‘Stars’. “Flattered you guys sampled ‘Infinity Guitars’ & ‘Riot Rhythm’ for ‘Stars’ but we were not contacted. Gotta clear those,” they tweeted.

Now The Hollywood Reporter reports that Sleigh Bells are officially suing Demi Lovato, UMG Recordings, and songwriters Carl Falk and Rami Yacoub for copyright infringement. Their previous allegations about ‘Riot Rhythm’ are not part of the lawsuit, which now concerns ‘Stars” similarities to ‘Infinity Guitars’ alone. “The similarities between ‘Infinity Guitars’ and ‘Stars’ transcend the realm of coincidence or shared genetic material, and inform the very essence of the works,” the complaint reads.

Along with monetary damages, Sleigh Bells are also asking for legal declaration that Lovato, her label and songwriters deliberately infringed copyright.

Last year, speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Yacoub and Falk denied sampling Sleigh Bells in any way: “We did not use any samples in Demi Lovato’s song ‘Stars.’ Demi was also not involved with the production. She only wrote top line.” This time around, reps for both parties have declined to comment.
