Superfood react to London gig roof collapse
Birmingham band speak to DIY about the “weird” first leg of their run of free shows.
Last weekend (Saturday 12th July), a Superfood gig at the KPH, London, was cut short because of a collapsed ceiling (as NME reports). No-one was hurt, but it was an abrupt end to leg one of the band’s four free shows this summer, with the remaining three being DIY Presents gigs.
Fans were evacuated from the West London venue immediately after the Birmingham band finished their opening track, ‘TV’. Earlier in the all-dayer the likes of The Magic Gang and The Black Tambourines provided sets.
“The guy came running upstairs with his arms crossed, doing an “X” motion. That’s a sign for danger - stop!” remembers frontman Dom Ganderton. “I thought it was too loud or something and he’d had enough, because there’d been bands playing there all day.”
“Apparently it happened 20 seconds in to our set,” says guitarist Ryan Malcolm. “We were being flagged down but we still managed to finish our first song (‘TV’).”
Crowds quickly dispersed following instructions to exit the building. “I just remember walking downstairs into a cloud of dust,” says bassist Emily Baker. “We were just waiting outside for a couple of hours. It was weird,” recalls Dom.
The remaining three gigs on the ‘Satellite Shows’ tour are set to be slightly more civilised affairs. “We’re going to take a property surveyor with us to make sure the building’s in good nick before we play next time,” Dom jokes. Below you can watch footage of the night, including the reaction to the incident itself.
Superfood play 3 more free gigs (all DIY Presents shows), beginning at The Social (22nd July), checking in at The Old Blue Last (31st) and finishing at Camden’s The Black Heart (6th August).
