Sweet Baboo delves into psych-funk on ‘Pink Rainbow’
Stephen Black, better known as Sweet Baboo, is gearing up to release his new album ‘Wild Imagination’ next week. Having already shared the title track and ‘Badminton’, he’s given us another taste of what to expect from the record (because our imaginations are running wild). ‘Pink Rainbow’ is an explosion of 8-bit drum machines, psychedelic synths, vintage organs and 80s funk-driven guitars. Speaking of the single, Stephen said: “I love everything about it; it’s so over the top. From the backing vocals to the title to Paul’s ostentatious keyboard solo. The lyrics are ridiculous too. My son’s favourite song at the time was Rainbow Connection by the Kermit the Frog. His favourite colour was pink. I thought that was a good start as any for a song. The world can be a pretty dreary place so you may as well step out onto a pink rainbow.” He also gives props to Arlo from Lancaster garage pop duo The Lovely Eggs for writing most of the lyrics to the second verse after explaining a documentary about the Flying Scotsman to him. Yep, it’s a bit of a journey this one. Listen to ‘Pink Rainbow’ (complete with sausage-based artwork) and see Sweet Baboo’s upcoming tour dates below.
