The Orwells: ‘I Let Loose For The First Time’

One of the most undeniably boisterous members of the Class of 2014, it took The Orwells a few shows to find their feet.

The Orwells’ live reputation precedes them. Even after just a handful of shows on this side of the Atlantic, they’re garnering attention as one of the most boisterous, ruckus-inducing new acts around.

Despite spending certain recent shows climbing onto rafters and crawling up the walls, It’s not always been that way for the Chicago five-piece, as the band’s guitarist Dominic Corso admits: ‘When we started out, [Mario] used the mic stand.’

‘It took me like fifteen shows to get rid of it,’ offers up frontman Mario Cuomo. ‘There was one show in a garage, in our suburb. It was a turning point. I realised that’s where I should go with it. It was just in some kid’s garage. Tom Peter’s garage. I let loose for the first time.

The feeling of shedding the stand bore a more important meaning than you might think: ‘There’s a freedom in having a microphone and being able to connect with the crowd and do whatever the fuck you want.’
