Thom Yorke’s ‘Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes’ hits 1 million downloads in a week
BitTorrent statement confirms the news seven days on from its surprise release.
Last week, Thom Yorke took the internet by complete surprise by immediately releasing his new solo album ‘Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes’ via BitTorrent.
Priced at $6, those who purchased the record then received an immediate digital download of the record, coupled with a video of ‘A Brain In a Bottle’.
A week on, and BitTorrent has confirmed that the record’s been downloaded more than 1 million times - this figure includes free downloads of the lead single/video, plus paid downloads of the full 8-track album.
BitTorrent further stated that Thom Yorke’s initial goal - “If it works well it could be an effective way of handing some control of Internet commerce back to the people who are creating the work” - is working.
Catch up with DIY’s review of ‘Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes’ here. “Free of statements and the man’s desire to make every record some kind of grand manifesto, ‘Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes’ is a mini-triumph that’s only occasionally tarnished. And if this was indeed some extended afterthought for Thom Yorke’s new release recipe, it’s one hell of an afterthought.”
