Watch Jamie xx put together ‘Ultramarine’ composition for ‘Soundscapes’

Producer made his interpretation of Van Rysselberghe’s ‘Coastal Scene’.

Earlier this month, Jamie xx was one of several artists to contribute to ‘Soundscapes’, a unique exhibition at the National Gallery.

Footage has now emerged of the producer putting together his unique composition, ‘Ultramarine’. The piece sees Jamie xx bringing his own interoperation of Van Rysselberghe’s ‘Coastal Scene’ painting. His final work is running at the ‘Soundcapes’ exhibition until 6th September.

DIY was there for the opening day, with El Hunt’s report saying: “Jamie xx’s installation shifts and sounds slightly different depending on where you stand in the room. Close up to ‘Coastal Scene’, his composition sounds all dotty, and fragmented, sprinkles of steel drum appearing now and again like the blue splodges that make up the painting itself. Step back, and ‘Ultramarine’ grows more saturated and less messy. It’s like his debut album ‘In Colour’ projected through a Philip Glass shaped prism.”
