Watch The Orwells Playing Lollapalooza 2013

Chicago fire-starters reminisce to DIY about their first experience at the fest.

At the beginning of this month, Chicago’s rudest, most intense live acts The Orwells arrived to perform at their very first Lollapalooza Fest.

DIY’s been given exclusive footage of Mario Cuomo and co embracing the experience; acting like giddy kids backstage and performing like ultra-pros onstage, despite the fact that they were essentially playing songs to their school friends:

Before we walked on the stage at Lollapalooza I jokingly said, ‘Damn, look at that crowd! I feel like we’re playing the high school talent show.’ I wasn’t referring to the size of the crowd, or to the abundance of teenagers that made it up. I was referring to all the familiar faces that were planted between every strange one. All the faces I would see in the halls of my high school,’ details Mario.

In 2010, I remember ditching math class with some girl to go to the school’s library computers to check the newly released Lollapalooza line up. It was a big event for us suburban Chicago kids. Something like Christmas morning for us.

Only three years later, Dominic and I exited Ogilvie station to find that same girl outside. Together we did the mile long hike to Grant Park, together. Only this year we weren’t spectators, we were a performer.

Before I walked off the stage after our Lollapalooza performance, I took a last look at all the kids who came to see us, and instead of focusing on the familiar faces, I focused on the strange ones. Laughing to myself, I hoped that every single one of them ditched math class with a pretty girl to check this years line up, and once they found out we were playing, broke the library’s strict “Be Quiet” rule.’
