Neu Pick Listen to Westerman’s lo-fi, honeyed new single ‘Easy Money’
The buzzy Londoner’s latest cut - out via Blue Flowers - is today’s Neu Pick.
Every weekday, DIY’s new music know-it-all Neu brings you one essential new release to get obsessed with. Today’s Neu Pick comes from Westerman.
The rise of Westerman over the last 12 months has been glorious to watch. From last August’s ‘Lie’ through the textured ‘Confirmation’ and its minimal, raw b-side ‘I Turned Away’ and most recent effort ‘Edison’, the Blue Flowers signing has proved himself a versatile, affecting new songwriter.
This promise is solidified on new cut ‘Easy Money’, a gorgeously simple, honeyed cut that sees his vocals at their smoothest and most affecting yet. His somewhat leftfield pop leanings are left at the door here: ‘Easy Money’ fits the singer-songwriter mould more snugly, recalling the melodies of Whitney in its daydream-like state. “Why should I worry? / Worrying makes you ill,” he sings, his vocals floating over a simple but affecting backing.
Speaking of the track, he says: “I started out writing a love song, then it sort of morphed into more of a conversation. It’s a conversation I had many times over with someone I care about a lot. The subject matter is something I was thinking about too often.
“I wanted to retain a sense of romance in the music as counterpoint to where lyrics ended up, and I tried to make it so the voice seems float within the music. The characters existing in a state of transience.”
The singer’s set to play a host of UK shows in support of Dirty Projectors next month, before heading out on his debut headline tour in October.
