You Me At Six: ‘We’ve Never Had A Reaction This Good’
Last week, the Surrey five-piece made their return to the airwaves, and with their new single going in at number 11, they did it in style.
You Me At Six declared their return last week when they released their brand new single ‘Lived A Lie’. Now, they’re celebrating their highest chart position so far, after it entered the charts at number 11.
‘It’s been a bit ridiculous to be honest,’ offers frontman Josh Franceschi, when DIY spoke to him about the past week. ‘We’ve basically never had a reaction this good to a single. With ‘The Swarm’, the best that did was 21 in the charts - which was still great - and that was with Thorpe Park and their backing behind it as well. I just think this week has been a testament to our fans. This was the track that we were going to ease people back into You Me At Six, and we definitely weren’t expecting this from it.’
Having made their largest live appearance to date - at Wembley Arena - back in December 2012, the band then took some time to regroup and prepare for their next work, the follow-up to 2011’s ‘Sinners Never Sleep’. Their new single stands as the first taste of their fourth album ‘Cavalier Youth’, but it’s - at least, according to Franceschi - not exactly a musical marker of what’s to come.
‘Ironically enough, this is the song that we thought would ease people back in to You Me At Six. That there was enough in there to remind people of our older stuff, but with an indication that there might be some surprises and changes on the record. Honestly, everything about the song is apart of the same sort of statement that we’re trying to make for this record. Even lyrically, it’s about being told that you can’t do something, and we’re basically saying that, yeah, we fucking can and we’re gonna do it. I think that was something we need to say early doors: we’re back and this is how it’s gonna go do. That’s the main thinking behind it. It’s a cool straight up, rock radio song, and that’s how it’s been received, so it’s filled its quota, so to speak.’
