Back in September, Nika Danilova – better known as Zola Jesus – shared her latest album ‘Okovi’.
Before sharing the album though, she previewed it with ‘Siphon’. Speaking of the track, she said at the time: “It was written for someone very close to me who had attempted suicide for the second time. In the weeks surrounding this tragedy, I desperately tried everything I could to convince them to stay alive. There is no greater horror than watching someone you love physically destroy themselves… not knowing if you would see them tomorrow . In the end, I decided this song needed to be heard, not only by this person, but by others as well”.
Now the track has an intense new video, directed by Zia Anger. In it, Nika stands in the open in two different weather climates. When it clouds over, the sky begins to rain blood down on Nika, making the video an intense experience. Anger commented: “It was a very sobering experience to be trusted with such visceral material”.
Zola Jesus is about to embark on a tour of the UK and Ireland as part of a larger run around Europe. She’ll head to Brighton, Glasgow, Manchester, Leeds, Norwich, Liverpool, Dublin and round off the journey in London. Tickets are on sale now.
